3 Easy Self-Care Tips for the New Year

This is a paid partnership. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Last year, a lot of things fell by the wayside because like many of you, I was just trying to keep my head above water. Now that I can finally breathe again, I have taken some time the last few days to take inventory of things that might have gotten lost in the shuffle of 2020. First on the list was “self care”. I know, that sounds almost mystical nowadays, but I am talking about ideas that will force myself to STOP and take a few moments for my health and wellbeing. Replacing bad habits and things that I overlooked just because times were hard. Here are 3 totally do-able self-care tips that I am fully embracing this year.

1. Read A Chapter A Day In A Calm Environment

Honestly. This seems so simple, however I seem to come up with every excuse not to read a book only to find myself mindlessly scrolling social media for an hour! There is so much value (for your brain’s sake) in picking up an actual book and reading. For me, it’s best not to read in my bed or else I will fall asleep by the second page! I also prefer holding an actual book. There’s just something about turning real pages not to mention no distraction from notifications on a device.

To honor my commitment in reading more, I finally completed a space in my house that’s purposely tucked away, quiet, and device free. For the finishing touches I placed an order through my Walmart+ Membership which included a soothing lavender & chamomile scented candle, a cozy Sherpa blanket, and my new favorite mug containing hot green tea! Now if this doesn’t set the stage for the best reading chill spot, I don’t know what does! There are no excuses now!

One chapter a day seems so do-able, right?! Especially if you are saving time not having to go to the store to shop! With member benefits like Walmart+ free shipping with no order minimum(excludes oversized/freight & Marketplace items), free delivery from your local store on orders $35+ (restrictions apply), member prices on fuel, and mobile scan & go for a contactless checkout experience in-store, I can spend more time on self-care and less on making trips to the store. All of my cozy spot items were delivered for free straight to my doorstep that day from my local Walmart.

2. Take Care of Your Health

In 2020, through several months of tests, biopsies, waiting, and more tests, I discovered that I had a pretty large nodule on my thyroid that had to be removed. A lot of the year was spent in tunnel vision with surgery looming. In December I had the right side of my thyroid removed and now that I am on the other side of it, it’s given me time to think about other health issues that might have been neglected.

Between stress, mask wearing, and the hard water at our new house, my skin has gone haywire! I have finally chosen to stop ignoring the break- outs and the dryness and do something about it! Cameron and I got a water softener system put in this week (insert praise hands emoji), and I got some excellent recommendations from my doctor and favorite beauty blogger on how to restore and keep my skin healthy. This may seem like a little thing, but it’s been a source of concern that I hadn’t addressed until now.

Not only am I taking care of my skin as this new year begins, I have made an appointment with my eye doctor (which needed to happen a long time ago!) What health steps do you need to take this year that you might have been putting off? Do it!

3. Get Good Rest

I know this one is not only tough but also not always in your control. With daily stressors sometimes your mind just can’t shut off and that’s hard. Also, kids can complicate your sleep schedule! So I started thinking about the elements that I can control which can lead me to a more peaceful and full night of rest.

First I bought new pajamas! It was long overdue but some of my old pj’s caused me to wake up in the middle of the night because they would twist to one side or another. Or, the fabric made me sweat or get overheated. Another thing I do now to get better sleep is drink a little herbal tea. It’s great for your digestion and you can find blends that are meant for rest or meant to soothe. And finally, I am kicking the habit of looking at my phone right before bed. Not only have I stopped falling asleep to a screen light, I have also set my phone to night mode at 10PM. No more distractions from notifications! I have noticed I fall asleep a lot faster now when I am not glued to my phone! I can say a prayer or think calming thoughts and drift right into sleep rather than my mind being focused on whatever video I just watched.

Take some time at the beginning of this year to think about what self-care means for you. Maybe it means scheduling a physical with your doctor, or drinking more water than you do soft drinks. Maybe it means getting a Walmart+ membership to make shopping for you and your family much more streamlined. Or maybe it means cooking more and eating out less. Let’s commit to doing things this year that promote health and peace-of-mind.
