My kids are still really little and don’t fully understand holidays in general yet. Cami, almost 4, understood Christmas really well this past year but still doesn’t understand holidays and birthdays that don’t involve presents for her…kids… With the help of a really great pre-school both my son and daughter will both load me up with hand print art, finger painted cards, and maybe even a small plant they potted “all by themselves”. As sweet as those gifts are, I know it’s up to me to make Mother’s Day a day where I can truly celebrate how far I’ve come, and how much work I have put into being a mom! This year is treat yo’self year and I am taking the time to think about myself for one day out of the year. Here are 4 ways I am treating myself this year for Mother’s Day and below is a bonus treat for you with an awesome give away.
In Houston there are small pockets of time when it’s not blistering hot and in those times, you are doing yourself a favor by being outside and enjoying the weather. This Mother’s Day I am going to enjoy spending time outside. We recently visited a garden and nursery near our house. The flowers were beautiful, the bees were buzzing, and the kids were amazed at all the colors of the flowers. This outing was when I settled that I would be outside on Mother’s Day because then, in that moment, I was in my happy place. Even if Mother’s Day consists of me sitting on our porch swing watching the kids run around in the backyard, I am content.
2. Be Comfortable
Every year we go to church on Mother’s Day (and most every Sunday of the year, haha!) Some years I have put more time and effort than I’d like to admit into figuring out what to wear on Mother’s Day for church. This year I had the “ah-ha” moment that church is not about what you are wearing or how “motherly” you look on Mother’s Day! This year I am dressing for comfort in something easy, breezy, and me. One thing that is for sure is that I will be pairing my look with the most comfortable sandals in my closet from Revere Shoes. The Casablanca sandal is super supportive and comfortable and will be perfect for transitioning from church, to Mother’s Day brunch, to time in the backyard with the kids. What else is great about them? I am giving away a pair below!
3. Do 1 Thing That Challenges You
When you are a mom, a lot of times you are thinking about a million other things: What are the kids going to eat? When can I squeeze in folding a load of laundry? What am I going to cook this week? Moments where I can think about something to challenge myself not as a mom but as a person can sometimes seem rare. This year on Mother’s Day I am going to purpose to take some time to think about something that would challenge me. Maybe choose a DIY project that requires a power tool, or continue trying to learn Spanish from my language app. I have a mom friend that told me that she was thinking about getting a job. She briefly scanned a job search board and found something right up her ally. To her I would suggest “APPLY” on Mother’s Day! Take that challenging step, because it only makes you stronger.
4. Pamper Yourself
And as a for real gift to myself, I have decided to take time to pamper myself at least once a month. My idea is to take time and get a pedicure. $32/month. 1 hour to myself. When I go, I will not worry about a thing. Just zone out, enjoy the massage chair and watch the Food Network while I get my toenails painted! It may not sound like a big deal, but taking even a moment out of your week or month can be huge in recharging yourself as a mom. This Mother’s Day I am committing to making this appointment with myself once a month and not flaking out or excusing this time away.
