May is always SUPER busy for me. My sister, mom, dad, and mother-in-law all have May birthdays, then you add Mother’s Day in the mix and you start to get the drift on what I mean. This year was just as busy as the year before with one exception. My older sister is pregnant and I can’t get over the fact that she is finally having a baby and now I want to throw her all the parties! So these last couple of weeks have been full of celebrations. It’s so easy to get caught up in the hoopla of the month for me so this year I wanted to try something new. I have teamed up with Boppy™ for a super special project that brought a lot of joy to women in my community! The Have Baby Will Travel campaign allowed me to find moms at random and hook them up with a Boppy™ Teething Scarf perfect for mom and baby. I met 5 moms in my community and we exchanged teething stories, victories, and defeats of motherhood as I approached them about the campaign. The last scarf went to my expectant sister as a little gift during her Fiesta themed gender reveal I threw at the end of the month. She may not know it now, but will needed this teething scarf by year’s end! Check out my Have Baby Will Travel journey along side some ideas on throwing a Fiesta gender reveal party!
The Challenge
From by favorite brunch spot, to Camilla’s dance class, to church I found moms with infants everywhere I turned. One thing I love about my community in Houston is the diversity and I found the same to be true with meeting these moms while I was out and about. It didn’t matter if the baby was white, black, asian, had straight hair, or curly, was male or female they all had something in common, their mamas were looking for a way to sooth sore gums from teething discomfort and didn’t want to pick up teething toys off the ground every 5 seconds! The Boppy Teething Scarf is easy to grip for baby and the fabric covers up drool that will inevitably happen. I love the colors of the scarves that I gave away and felt like they could go with anything and be worn several different ways, even as a long “necklace” during summer months. I exchanged info with some of the moms so that we could keep in touch as our babies grow. Hendrix has been going to town on his with his two teeth and Shazia (top right) will get double the use out of hers with her 6 month old twin boys!
The Party
My sister Kendra was the last stop on the Have Baby Will Travel train for me and I couldn’t wait to present it to her at her Fiesta themed gender reveal! For the party I wanted it to be true to Mexican culture so I made sure that the decorations and the food were as authentic as possible.
To eat of course we had tacos, but who really needs an excuse to nosh on tacos? The taco bar consisted of flour tortillas, corn tortillas, and hard shells. There was also a chicken and beef option and all the fixin’s.
For dessert I had Mexican cuisine favorites such as pan dulce, trés leches cake, churros, and conches.
To drink guests enjoyed Jarritos sodas, Topo Chico mineral water, and watermelon water that was an absolute hit with all the guests.
As guests walked in they were immediately greeted with the bright colors of Mexico. They filled out cards with blanks for well wishes for the baby. Guests also wrote their name under whichever column they thought would be the gender of the baby. My sister’s friend who is also an artist hand cut the adorable papel picado that hung both in the walk way and outside in the backyard. They were so intricate and included my sister and her husband’s names.
The plan was that my sister’s husband would hit the piñata that was filled with the color candy that went with the baby’s gender. Right when we got the piñata set up it started to down pour.
The rain didn’t put a damper on the party! And I am totally excited about the coming arrival of my nephew!
I can’t wait to see my sister as a mom, she has been such a great aunt to my daughter!
