Back To School Style: First Grade Edition

I remember as a kid, back to school time was my favorite time of the year besides Christmas. Getting to see your friends again after being scattered by the summer, the smell of crisp fresh school supplies, and finally knowing who was going to be in your class are all noteworthy memories. But the one that reigns supreme was going back to school shopping for new clothes. THAT. WAS. EVERYTHING. Now that I am a mom of a first grader, I am getting to re-live back to school fun times and I see that same excitement rubbing off onto Cami.

For Cami’s back to school: first grade edition wardrobe, we paced ourselves with purchases. One weekend we shopped for all the bows in all the colors. Another weekend her grandparents hooked her and her brother up with several pair of new shoes. And finally, a few weeks before the first day of school we shopped for clothes.

Ya’ll. I wasn’t trying to fight through crowds at stores with my almost 4 year old and a 6 year old. When the kids went shoe shopping we met my parents at the mall and that was enough for me to be resolved in my decision to do the clothes shopping online. My go-to spots where I got the majority of the kid’s back to school clothes was H&M and Old Navy. For staples like plain t-shirts and biker shorts Cami can wear under dresses and skirts, I headed to Ross and Walmart.

Cami loves to wear dresses. Over the summer I let her pick out her own clothes to wear each day. The pendulum either swung “Punky Brewster” or church dresses with no meeting in the middle! For her back to school wardrobe I made sure to get her several dresses and skirts that would be comfortable to wear all school day no matter the activity.

I loved the trend this summer of wearing summer dresses with tennis shoes. I translated that right over to Cami’s back to school style which works out well especially on P.E. days. Another tip for continual wear of those summer dresses is to throw a short sleeve or long sleeve shirt under those spaghetti straps and that will take you from summer all the way through fall.

When Cami’s clothes arrived she immediately wanted to try them on. It’s crazy how new clothes can change your whole vibe! As she tried on each outfit she would tell me how she wanted her hair to look and what bow she wanted to wear. She instantly became her own stylist! I think that’s the thing about back to school clothes shopping. When you feel great in what you are wearing you can start the year off feeling as though your best foot is forward.

Cami has exactly a week before she starts school and she has been busy mixing and matching what she is going to wear for the first week. It warms my heart to see her so excited about getting back in the swing of things for school. Here’s to wishing you and your kids a happy, healthy school year as they return back to school!
