I love a good makeover story. I mean seriously, who does’t? My husband and I have lived in our home a little over 3 years and it’s always been a work in progress as far as getting each room just the way we want it to be and feel. I am so happy to share that our living room, the heart and soul of our home, is finally a space that we love. It’s grownup enough for me to feel as though I can have alone time with a book and a glass of wine but kid friendly enough for my kids to be themselves and not feel like they can’t touch anything. When we began the project of updating this space, the first thing that came to mind was “where are we going to get the money to do all that”? In doing a little research I found that there were so many ways to have what you want when it comes to decorating without breaking the bank! I am so excited to share with you how you can have a fabulous living space without going broke.
1.Prioritize Your Wish List
Our living room use to have carpet. I didn’t so much mind the carpet but as the years went on it started to look flat and worn. Then the kids came and so did the playdough and slime. What finally pushed us to the decision to get rid of the carpet was when my son (6 months) started getting really bad allergies. When his doctor started talking about a plan of action I knew that our carpet would have to go. With my husband and I, it’s hard to start working on one aspect of a room and then not want to change everything! And that’s exactly what happened when we got our (made to look like real wood) tile floors! When our floors got laid and it looked so beautiful the next thing we wanted to do was get curtains, and a rug, and throw pillows oh my! Fortunately we caught our breath and made a budget. We listed things in order of priority and purchased items one at a time as we could afford them.
After you get a hard floor the first thing you want to do is cover it up with a rug, haha! We knew this was top priority because the kids needed something soft to play on. Because I knew that there was a strong possibility that slime would end up on my rug, I knew that I couldn’t get anything expensive. Um…did you know that amazon sold rugs? That was just what I needed to find to get the best deal and get something that fit our style! There were lots of great choices but Cameron and I settled on this blue bohemian area rug and it was the perfect purchase at $150 to tie the space together. For an 8′ x 10′, that is an amazing price!
We also found our curtains and curtain rod on Amazon for a fraction of the price it would have cost us at a home décor store.
2. Subscribe to a Site that Sends You Deals Straight to Your Email
This is key! You don’t need to go out and hunt for good deals when they can come directly to your inbox! I have been a faithful subscriber/shopper of Jane.com for years, even before we had our home. 3. The Devil is in the Details
Once you know the colors and textures you want to go with for your new space, making it your own with unique décor items will transform your room to something that has your finger print all over it! To make our house our home I loved the idea of having our family name as a part of the space. Finding these specialty items was a pice of cake on Jane and it was virtually a one-stop-shop.
Can you tell I love boxwoods? Greenery always brings life to a space. Our semi-industrial, shabby-chic-ish space has a lot of life! I was even able to score this boxwood leaf wreath perfect to add more texture to my mirror on Jane.
Another texture that is dominant throughout the space and my home in general is dark wood. I found these awesome dark wood stained shelves on Jane which were perfect to display the picture of my pride and joy…and also a cute faux-flower arrangement. By adding family pictures it further adds your imprint to the space and makes it uniquely yours.
While I still have some work to do in other rooms of my house (man I can’t wait to get my bedroom in order), I am overjoyed with the way my living space turned out.
