I don’t know about you, but I am so thrilled that the Olympics is happening this year! It’s always a symbol of unity and country pride that frankly, we all need right now. I am gearing up to watch my favorite athletes compete in some of the most exciting events to watch (I love gymnastics and diving)! Watching the opening ceremonies with friends is a tradition and I am sharing all the details for my olympics themed party just in case you want to do the same.
I love the idea of having food that represents the country where the Olympics will be held. This year it will be in Tokyo, Japan so consider this a great time to display a fabulous sushi bar! At my party I plan on having many options from Asian cuisine, because…Asian food is my favorite! A great idea is to also incorporate finger foods like spring rolls that people can grab and go and won’t get their hands too messy.
Treats that represent your country or heritage are also a great idea. Coming off the heels of the 4th of July, I was able to find USA themed colors, icing, sprinkles, etc. at a discounted price! If your heritage is from another country, this is such a great opportunity to share your country’s food with your friends and party guests. I also like to ask friends that will be in attendance to bring food or drinks to share that represent their heritage or culture.
One of my favorite beverage tips when it comes to Olympics themed parties is to get drinks that represent different countries. It’s a great on-theme drink solution AND it’s fun for guests to try a drink they may have never tried before. It’s almost like a drink sampling from around the world!
Some ideas would be Dos Equis (Mexico), Heineken (Germany), Foster’s (Australia), Miller Lite (USA) and sake (representing Japan). You could also serve Le Croix or Perier (France), and Clearly Canadian (Canada) as non-alcohol options and gatorade (the official sports drink of the USA) for the kids at the party.
Decorating your Olympics themed party to represent the country you will be cheering on during the games is a great option. As I mentioned above, if you are from the U.S. you could really rack up on discounted 4th of July items and decorate your “Team U.S.A.” party on the cheap! For my party I chose to go for a more global approach with decorating.
“Go For The Gold” was the underlining theme that I was going for for this olympics themed party. This included gold balloon letters that spelled just that as the main focal point and gold accents including: gold tablecloths and gold plates. On top of the gold tablecloth I found a great flag runner to put down the center of the table. Speaking of flags, cocktail toothpick flags are a super easy way to decorate your cupcakes or finger foods you will be serving at your party.
For name “cards” I found the perfect little plastic trophies that came with a black base. This makes it really easy to write the name of each guest on them with a chalk marker or gold permanent marker.
To add some height to my tablescape I used simple world print balloons. I blew them up with helium and I love how they made the table and the theme come together.
No matter how you choose to celebrate the Olympics, take some time to enjoy the unity that the games bring. Get together with your friends, cheer on hometown heroes (go Simone Biles!), and start conversations about your heritage!
