Well. We made it to the summer halfway point. Although it seems like retailers are moving us through this year at warp-speed (like Hobby Lobby and their endless aisles of Christmas and back-to-school supplies out in droves on July 5,) I am fully aware that we are only halfway through the dog days of summer. My kids have snacked themselves into boredom and I have said “go play” more times than the law should allow! In an effort to get out of this summer slump, I am going to re-charge the summer with some fun activities to do with the kids and I hope this fires you up too!
1. Keep ‘Em Wet-n-Wild
My kids could be in the pool all day, every day. It’s been great having them both in swim lessons so that they can really enjoy and love swimming. Last year when we didn’t have a pool, finding splash pads in my area was my mission. Community pools were hard to come by with COVID but splash pads seemed to be a better bet.
This summer we visited Kalahari Indoor Water Park and I must say, it was fun for all ages, even me! I would highly recommend finding an indoor water park near you or making it a mini family vaycay if there is one that is a little bit of a drive from your home town.
2. Go To The The Movies
In this day and time we can watch new release movies in the comfort of our own homes. I don’t know about you guys, but I missed the experience of going to an actual theater. You can’t beat the smell of movie theater popcorn! With things open to the public I am delighted to take my kids to movies now. Hendrix just got to the age where he can sit through a whole movie without getting too restless. This means more family movie times are in store this summer.
3. Go To A Book Store
I took the kids to Half Price Books on a whim the other day and we had the best time! When the kids found the children’s reading section they took off! I told them that they could each pick 3 books. It also gave me a chance to dig for books that are on Cami’s reading level so that we can continue to practice reading through the summer. This trip to the book store was a super inexpensive activity for us to do.
4. Skating/Bowling
These are two things still on our summer to-do list. I forget they even exist but have fond memories doing both from my childhood. Before summer’s end I want to make sure the kids experience both. Not to mention, I need to see if I still got it, haha!
5. Go To The Craft Store
One of our favorite things to do over the summer or school breaks is to take the kids to the craft store to pick out a few things to keep those creative juices flowing. On our most recent trip Cami picked a tie dye kit and we have been tie dye makin’ fools this summer. Hendrix picked a rock painting set and has since branched out to trying to paint all the bull rock we have around our plants. Another bonus to craft stores is that several (including Michael’s) have classes for kids for a low cost or for free!
Cheers to the next month of summer before school is back in session! Stock up on snacks and get out there with those kids and make some memories!
