DIY: Tailgate Astroturf Football Banner

We are deep into football season and I have yet to go to a tailgate!  So, I decided that I would create my own little tailgate on a budget.  I recently got a new, more family friendly car, so I wanted to make sure that when it came to decorating my tailgate it would make my new car look good too.  So off to the store I went and it wasn’t your typical craft store this time.  This time I took to my local hardware store to create my DIY Tailgate Astroturf Football Banner and I think it turned out really great!  For my tailgate bites I turned to CVS and they had everything that I needed!  I even found a little inspiration from the football themed SNICKERS® packaging.

Materials

  • Astroturf (you can purchase at your local hardware store by the foot for less than $4/ft. You will need about 3 ft.)
  • 1 sheet of Cardstock paper
  • White paint
  • Sponge paint brush
  • Twine
  • Rubber number stamps
  • Scissors
  • Masking or painter’s tape

Use your cardstock to create your triangular pattern. My triangle pieces were 7″ across the top. Then place your cardstock pattern on top of the astroturf and cut out your shape. I cut out 9 triangle “flags”.

Next, place your tape on your tingle piece about half an inch apart.  I “eye-balled” mine by placing the tape on either side of the point.

Now it’s time to paint your center line. Use the sponge brush and dab the paint down the center of the triangle between your tape lines.

Remove tape.

Ta-da!  That’s a pretty good looking line if you ask me!  Go ahead and repeat the line painting on all 9 flags so that it’s out of the way.

Next it’s time for your number stamps.  Dab your paint on the number stamp.  You are going to need (2) 10, (2) 20, (2) 30, (2) 40, (1) 50 flags.

Press your numbers on either side of your line.  Again, I eye-balled, but I would say the number will be about half an inch from your line.

Repeat by numbering the rest of your astroturf flags.

When you have completed your numbering take your scissors and use them to poke holes through the sides of your astroturf flags.  This will be where your twine goes through.  It takes a little muscle so be careful not to poke yourself!  Move those fingers out of the way girl!

Thread your twine through the holes but make sure your numbers are in the correct order!  From left to right it should read 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10 (just like the yard lines on a football field).

And there it is!  A super easy DIY Tailgate Astroturf Banner for less than $20!  I bought a little more astroturf because now I want to try to create other things out of the stuff!
