5 Tips For Keeping Cool This Summer

It’s no secret that the summer time is my LEAST favorite season.  I fully admit that I hate Summer. A lot due to the heat alone but mostly because of the humidity/heat combo we have going on here in Houston.  Though being pregnant is a blessing, being pregnant in the summer time is not ideal if you live where I do.  Nonetheless, I have hit this summer heat head on at the peak of my pregnancy and have learned a few things along the way to stay cool.

Boy oh boy, I have learned these past couple months about how to dress the bump so that I am not dripping of sweat by the time I have walked from the parking lot to the store.  “Skinny” maternity jeans are out of the question!  When I was pregnant with Cami it was a bit cooler out and my old skinny jeans and maternity leggings were my jam.  Well honey, that season is up!  The looser fitting on my body, the better!

2. Indulge in Cold Sips

You will hardly see me without an ice cold beverage these days.  I think ice is a mixture of a pregnancy craving and a summer heat survival mechanism and I have gotten really creative with it!  From creating iced or frozen mocktails to frequent trips to Sonic and the local snow cone joint, to my all time favorite of flavored iced teas, a cold beverage can keep me cool to the core.

3. Cut It Off or Tie It Back

The minute those winter winds stopped blowing, I got my hair cut because I knew my long hair sticking to a sweaty neck was not going to fly.  I had been growing my hair for 2 years prior to getting pregnant but the choice to cut it for the summer is one of the best I have made!  In fact each time I go to the salon I ask her to cut it shorter than the last.  Feeling a breeze on my neck whether by wind or by fan has been everything!  While on vacation, or at the pool you’ll typically catch me in a hat for some added shade. Pictured is my favorite HOU hat  because I am all about repping my city, even if it’s hot as hell here!

4. Pool Time

I’ve never really been a pool person, but I can’t help but gravitate to it this summer because a. I have a toddler that is obsessed with “fimming” and b. floating around relieves a lot of lower back pain…and other unmentionable pains I have been experiencing with this pregnancy.  The cooling element is a bonus!

5. Go from A/C to A/C

Unlike cities like NYC where people walk everywhere, in Houston we go from an air conditioned car to an air conditioned store or workplace.  The A/C in your car is up high at all times so the window of actually having to be outside is small.  When planning summer activities calculating the time that you actually have to be outside is a must especially when there are children involved. Unless there is a pool, splash pad, or fountain involved, you don’t really see many people hanging out outside if they don’t have to be and you won’t see me out there either!
